Dear Wellesley community,

I am deeply saddened to inform you that this morning we learned of the tragic death of Sama Mundlay ’20. Sama was in Amsterdam, where she was to study this fall at Vrije Universiteit Amersterdam, when she was involved in an accident on the road.

Sama was an international relations and history major, a member of Zeta Alpha Society, and a resident most recently of Beebe Hall. She was a valued and involved member of our Wellesley community. Words cannot begin to express the depth of my sympathy for Sama’s family, friends, and all those whose life she touched.

The Mundlay family has asked for privacy until they have had an opportunity to process what has happened. I am requesting that all members of our community respect the family’s wishes and refrain from reaching out to them or posting to social media.

Losing a member of our community is shocking and devastating. Please reach out for any support you may need at this difficult time. Support services are available through campus chaplains for all those who wish to talk to someone. Their offices can be reached at 781-283-2685. Support is also available around the clock from the Stone Center Counseling Service, 781-283-2839. Please remember that your Class Dean can provide any academic support you may need in the days ahead, and residential staff is always available to you in your halls.

We invite faculty and staff to access the Employee Assistance Program for support. You can reach this free resource at 800-451-1834, or visit our website to learn more.

We will hold a campus memorial service later this fall so that we may come together as a community to honor the memory of Sama Mundlay.

With a heavy heart,

Paula A. Johnson
