Re: Coming in January: New Format for New Wellesley College Usernames
Date: December 6, 2018

Recently, we have encountered cases of emails being sent to the wrong person because of common usernames—the sender assumes the recipient’s email address is a first initial followed by last name, without realizing that address may have been assigned to someone else. This can cause serious problems. To minimize such errors, Wellesley will be moving to a new methodology for creating usernames and default email addresses for all accounts created after January 1, 2019.

Beginning January 1, 2019, usernames for all new members of the Wellesley College community will use the first initial and last initial followed by the next available sequence number (e.g., Ganesan Ravishanker would have gr1). All current usernames and emails will continue to function and will not be affected by this change.

In addition to the standard username@wellesley.edu, every user will continue to have additional email aliases that we provide for clearer email addresses:

  1. First name dot last name (ganesan.ravishanker@wellesley.edu)
  2. Preferred first name dot last name (ravi.ravishanker@wellesley.edu)

Please see our webpage to learn more about this change. More information about setting up and using aliases with your Wellesley Gmail account.
