WELLESLEY COLLEGE
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Paula A. Johnson

Dear Wellesley community,

I hope you all had a chance to watch today’s senior celebration—Congratulations to the class of 2020! The celebration was pre-recorded, prior to the events of this week. Shortly before the ceremony began, I taped a video message acknowledging the pain and anger many of us feel about the killing of George Floyd and so many black Americans. I believe deeply that this is a time when we need to acknowledge and call out the systemic racism in our country, and to rededicate ourselves as a community and as a country to the goal of inclusive excellence.

In this same spirit, I want to share an oped, which was published today by CNN, that tells the story of our beloved alumna Rana Zoe Mungin ’11. The piece addresses the racial and economic inequities I spoke about in my senior celebration remarks, and how we must confront them.

I believe that Wellesley is uniquely able to address these issues, together. As a community dedicated to inclusive excellence, we will use this moment to look inward to reaffirm this commitment. Together, and with fierce and determined spirits and an abiding hunger for justice, we will find ways to overcome the tragedy of this moment, and seize our opportunity to recreate the world.

Sincerely,

Paula A. Johnson
President
