Dear Students,

It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of October. This weekend, Halloween weekend is traditionally a time of joy and connection for Wellesley students. There are parties on and off campus, trick or treating at the President’ house and pumpkin carving events amongst others. This year we engage in this activity with a bit of caution. The Covid-19 risk continues to exist so we must be mindful and keep safety at top of mind.

I understand that some students have created their own Covid support program.  While I applaud the students for wanting to support each other during times of need, the procedures that are being communicated could lead to serious problems. I want to assure you that the College has ample support for students who need assistance with Covid tests.

As you are all aware, Wellesley is one of few colleges that still offers rapid and PCR testing to students.  Testing is available three times a week (MWF) at the College Club.  Health Services offers rapid testing five days a week if students have symptoms. In urgent situations, if students need a test at night, they can ask the community directors in Res Life.  Students can also apply for their own 8 free tests / month from their health insurance. Encouraging students to rely on “off the grid” testing is not helping roommates and others who will get communications with information about their health if the test is done at health services or at the College Club.  Please use the resources that we have provided. Thank you to all the students who are living out the motto Non Ministrare, Sed Ministrare by being a part of this movement to support your sibs, but at this point, we have to ask you to use the resources that the College has provided.

Upcoming Covid Booster clinic will be on Friday, November 11, 2022 from 10am-4pm in Tishman. Register here: Reminders:
*Wear a mask
*Bring your Covid Vaccination card with you to be updated
*Arrive early to your scheduled time

The Office of Student Wellness has shared some important messages regarding harm reduction and safety to help you stay safer while having fun! Check them all out here.

The Office of Public Safety reports that the blue phones are now installed and for the most part, should be working just fine. Public Safety also offers the following suggestions for safe socializing:

1.    Plan Ahead
If you’re going to be off campus at night make sure you plan ahead to get a ride home. If you book a taxi, Uber or Lyft, make sure that you confirm that the vehicle you booked is the correct vehicle that arrives. Check if the license plate and the driver’s name matches the booking on your phone. Only use a licensed taxi firm and never get in an unmarked taxi, Uber or Lyft. All ride-share vehicles have to display their company’s information.

2.    Stay In Touch
Remember to keep your mobile phone charged and ready in case you need to call for help.  Make sure someone knows where you’re going and what time they can expect you back, especially if you are using off campus transportation.

3.    Be Alert
Avoid walking alone. If you do have to walk alone in the dark, avoid things such as listening to music or talking on the phone for too long. It’s important to be fully alert and aware of your surroundings, without any distractions. This goes for crosswalks as well! Make sure you look both ways before crossing the street.

4.    Watch Out For Your Each Other
This weekend has many fun activities planned. However, sometimes people have a bit too much “fun” prior to planned events. Look out for each other and trust your instincts. If something or a situation does not feel safe, plan to leave and help others to also leave. If you or your friends need help or have a friend who is in trouble or needs medical help, Call Public Safety. We are here to help and want to make sure we get people the help they need as quickly as possible.

Public Safety is a resource to support students (781)283-5555 or (781)283-2121 They can provide escort services across campus.  If you would rather not ride in their cars, they can follow you from one destination on campus to another or to your vehicle or residence if you do not feel safe.

5.    Have Fun!
Finally,  Halloween trick or treating at the Dean of Students Office between 11- 4pm on Monday – We will have candy and snacks and we would love to see you. We might or might not have costumes on!

President Johnson invites you to Trick-or-Treat at the President’s House, 735 Washington Street, Monday, October 31st, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. We are looking forward to seeing all the creative costumes.
