Summer should include a break from schoolwork, exams, and papers….but it’s a great time to do a few things to help you as you consider careers after Wellesley. Here are a few suggestions of things you might try!
1. Talk to people. Most people enjoy talking about themselves and their careers. Try to find ways to talk to people about the work they have done. At your internship, ask someone you work with to have coffee with you. At a barbeque, try talking to one of the guests about his/her job.
2. Update your resume and Linkedin profile with new experiences. Learn how to use Linkedin effectively (they have some excellent tutorials) and spend some time searching. Read the profiles of those in your field and see what they have done.
3. Do some online research and join Linkedin groups or subscribe to newsletters or blogs in fields that are of interest to you. You may have more time for casual reading in the summer than you do during the school year.
4. Consider volunteering. Perhaps you already have an unpaid internship, but if you have a little time on the weekends or a week with nothing planned, consider volunteering in a way that would allow you to explore one of your career interests.
5. At the end of the summer, thank those with whom you have worked and make sure you have accurate contact information. One or more of them may be important resources for you in the future, if you need a recommendation or help with brainstorming for the following summer.
