Prion poetry

First is the sonnet I wrote about melting ice.

I am running to the far  finish line
the heat quickly chasing me at my tail

I was very sure I was doing  fine

My competitor as slow as a snail

But I have softly taken for granted
The swift speed the raging runners can bring
An idea was nearly implanted
that I could outrun them with a zing

I said to myself I must move as fast
I must try harder to pick up the pace
the faster I move and more time that’s passed
the more I lose form of my solid face

I once was rock solid fit formed ice
but liquid am I now, the heated price

For the poem about prions, I wanted to get one very basic message through. This message is that when structures become misshapen, they are less and less likely to work. This is because in anatomy and physiology of all organisms, structure equals function. Each structure has its very specific function that even the smallest of mutations can affect.

A misshapen domino
falls onto its friend
knocking over the  row
until it reaches end

One bad protein
changes into many
suddenly the number seen
of demented prions becomes plenty

with importance in an organism
structure equals function
but when structures break the shapes can’t take
the role of their conjunction

so what comes with this, you may ask
mutation and disease!
for every prion that fails its task
an organism falls closer to its knees
