I chose to represent these two amino acids, respectively Alanine and Tyrosine. I thought the pastel colors represented with the help of different liquids and this specific kind of paper were very interesting, but not representative of the diminished functions of the brain that take place when proteins fold and create prions. The appearance of prions in the brain of an organism shows no exterior signs but has devastating effects. The pale colors were too ‘peaceful’ and did not portray the drastic consequences fully enough.

I decided I was going this first technique to portray ‘healthy’ amino acids, and then contrast then with a representation of a prion with the second technique available to us, using the darker ink. I thought this differentiation with colors would be helpful in showing that while they are similar structurally, their nature have very different effect. Unfortunately, I ran out of time during the classroom to finish my project.
