After seeing the art piece that is hung up in Professor Ulu’s office, a wave of inspiration and realization hit me. You really cannot separate art and science. The depictions we see in science textbooks – whether it be the prion, an animal cell, or the photovoltaic process – were all rendered via the human mind. Our perceptions greatly affect the presentation and depiction of science as well as art. At the same time, without science, we would not be able to understand how our perceptions differ. We would not be able to comprehend what is going on in our bodies while we our perceiving. We would not be able to understand art and in many cases, make art without science. For instance, paint. Paint is comprised of different chemicals – some scientist had to do the research and analysis to figure out what composition of chemicals is best fit for canvas versus clay versus poster-board, etc. It is hard for one to exist without the other.
