Week 8: Science and Movement

I was only able to stay for the biology part of this week’s lecture and not the movement workshop, which made this assignment a bit uncomfortable to do. I have no training in the artistic movement of the body, so I am a bit stiff. I was trying to choose a classical song, but as that is not up my alley, I did not succeed in selecting a classical song. While I was listening to some KPOP, I happened upon B.A.P’s “Hurricane.” Some parts of the song fit what I wanted to portray (prions and mad cow disease), so I edited the song.

After rehearsing a few times, I decided to record my piece. In my video, I started out by depicting the scare. Then, I made active use of my background and pointed to postcards of the cities or made signs of the cities. Around the halfway mark of the piece, where the “virus” can be heard, I emulated the initial transformation of PrP^C into PrP^Sc and the subsequent transformations. This sequene of movements also represents how this transformation effect multiplies, cannot be stopped, and leads to holes in the brain. The turn represents the infected truly becoming “mad,” and its unpreventable death.
