Introduction and Personal Product

Hi everyone,

My name is Chelsie, and I am a senior studying sociology and education. During my free time, I enjoy writing, going on picnics, painting, and doing puzzles. I signed up for this class because of its hands-on, project-based approach, which is an experience I don’t always have in my other coursework.

My personal product is my handheld eraser. I bought this item back in middle school, because I never liked the texture and flimsiness of a ‘regular’ eraser. This eraser pen is reusable in the sense that I need only to replace the eraser portion; however, the size and shape of the eraser is specific and therefore not available everywhere. The grip allows me to control how much or how little I want to erase, and the adjustment ensures that the eraser will be sturdy when in use. While the plastic material of my eraser pen may not be sustainable, the product is durable and able to be maintained. I would estimate its cost to be three to four dollars.

The eraser pen is made up of at least five parts, including a spring to adjust the length of the eraser exposed and a pink outer shell that serves as a cover. A few questions I have about my product are how the manufacturers determined the ‘standard’ length of the pen and why there are four (as opposed to, say, three) prongs to hold the eraser in place.

  1. It’s great to have you in class, Chelsie! I love eraser pens, too. I’d be happy to think through the reason for the four prongs (rather than three) in office hours if you’d like … that’s a great question!
