The climate strikes were organized because we (every person on earth) are facing a global crisis wherein our planet is fast becoming unlivable. As much as it is a global issue, it is a personal issue, which is why people are striking. I think that not participating is a choice that is either due to necessity or due to ignorance. Ignorance may be to the extent of the problem or to the ability to influence the change. Some people genuinely don’t believe there is a problem, and send a message through their lack of participance. Striking provides an opportunity to come together as a community in a common cause and see the extent to which people care about the planet. I feel grateful to be part of a community that is cognizant of this problem. Although striking provides these opportunities, it does not put policy in place or change the behavior of those who possess the power to make a difference and opt not to. Those people can hear what strikers say, but have to choose to listen. Support does not necessarily have to be physical, however, there has to be active effort to have one’s voice heard. We speak online, through our votes, and through our everyday sustainable choices.
