Climate Strike on September 20, 2019
On Friday morning, I made the spontaneous decision to take part in the climate striking instead of going to class. Initially, I was not sure whether to partake in the local strike at Wellesley College or to go to Boston. I took some time to learn the various strike activities that were to take place at both of these strikes, and I settled for the strike at Wellesley College. In the afternoon, I joined the energetic group at the Chapel where people sang and chanted in preparation for the walk to City Hall. Very few enthusiastic students had written posters, and I regretted not making one for myself. As we marched to City Hall, I realized just how much of a big problem climate change is and how many people choose to turn a blind eye to it. More than any other feeling, I remember being underwhelmed by the turn out of Wellesley students at Chapel and even fewer students marched all the way hall. After talking to a friend who did not take part in the march, I came to understand that some people do not believe in their voices or actions having an impact in such a manner. She believed that Mother nature always replenishes the earth, so striking against climate change would have been a waste of her time. I was a little bit disappointed in that kind of mentality as I strongly believe that any form would have a greater impact if more people would participate in it. Meanwhile, I also believe that climate change is always going to take place but this initiative was aimed to reduce the rate at which it changes and the human factors that accelerate it and I completely supported it.
