These strikes were organized to raise awareness about just how much damage we are doing to the planet and get us to stop and think about the impact big corporations are doing to pollute our home.
I think Trump’s rhetoric has greatly fueled the fires of climate change efforts. For those who do not participate in these strikes, they may feel that just striking for one day will accomplish nothing. They will continue to be mindful of their actions and conserve when possible, but they may feel that striking is an unnecessary measure. When I heard about members of the college striking, I initially felt that there shouldn’t be anything hindering us from going to class, but I appreciate their sentiment even though I do not fully understand it. Now that I think about it, I realize that not doing anything is just as bad as continuing with our ways and being able to stop and reflect is a huge benefit to striking. A limitation that I see is the fact that I don’t think big companies or institutions that produce the most pollution will change their minds very much from just a day of strikes.
Other methods and approaches (apart from striking) that could create productive progress on the issues raised by the strike would have to start in public policy! Lawmakers need to regulate and create reasonable limits and spark change, which won’t sound great to the public but needs to be done.
