New Directions for Feminist Peace Research – Gender, Violence, and Global Health: Mapping Intersections

Funding Source: Fulbright Award – My Fulbright semester at Tampere University, Finland is inscribed in an ongoing collaboration with the Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI), which pushes forward the intersections between feminism and Peace Research. I will work primarily on finalizing the manuscript of the Routledge Handbook of Feminist Peace Research. The Handbook is premised on the argument that feminist thinking is necessary to analyze the core issues in Peace Research, in order to find solutions to global problems and to promote the peaceful transformation of violent conflict. We bring forward feminist perspectives on traditional Peace Research topics such as militarism, peacekeeping, arms trade, and the articulation of different forms of violence. We also advance critical and alternative topics that mainstream Peace Research has sidelined. These include, for example, the role of masculinities and femininities in war and peace; the political economy of gender and militarism; intersectionality as a methodology to understand war and peace; postcolonial and decolonial feminist perspectives; the queering of war and peace; and many others. In sum, the Handbook of Feminist Peace Research contributes to the visibility of these feminist critical approaches to Peace Research, and makes them accessible to scholars and students interested in the subject. It is co-edited with researchers at TAPRI, Bristol University, University of Ghana, and Gothenborg University. With another scholar from Tampere University, I will also turn an existing co-authored conference paper into a peer-reviewed article outlining the theoretical case for a sustained and much-needed engagement between Peace Research and Global Health. These projects will be complemented by teaching at TAPRI and public and in-class lecturing for Global Health and Development.
