In January 2013, LTS will be implementing print management software called Papercut in the libraries and computing labs. This software is used at many colleges to minimize waste and track printing volume. Access to printing will not change. Papercut will allow printing from your personal computer as well as College computers. Printing will remain free (without a limit) for the Spring 2013 semester.

Community printer locations include:

  • Clapp Library: Reference Room, Knapp Center
  • Science Center: Science Library, 1st and 2nd floor kiosk stations
  • Pendleton: Social Science Labs 327/327a
  • Jewett: Art and Music Libraries

To print to one of these community printers, you will print to a generic printer queue. You can then release your print job from any of these printers (over the next 12 hours) using an adjacent release station. Logging into a release station with your Wellesley domain account is immediate; you will see all jobs you have submitted in the last 12 hours, and can choose which ones you would like to print.

Papercut users will be able to track their printing volume through a web app that provides feedback on the number of trees consumed, grams of carbon produced, and a 60W bulb “energy equivalency.” Students, faculty, and staff printing in the libraries and computing labs will need to print through Papercut. All existing print queues for these locations will be changed so pre-existing print settings on your computers will no longer work. Faculty and staff printing outside of these locations will remain unchanged. Papercut is not being implemented in administrative locations.

Colleges implementing print management software often report an immediate reduction in printing volume due to the reduction of waste. LTS will collect printing data through the Spring 2013 semester and will share any changes from the current 3 million page per year printing rate. LTS will work with our advisory groups and College Government later in the spring semester to examine the data and determine whether any changes to our printing policy are necessary.

If you have any questions or suggestions as we implement print management in these spaces please contact Heather Woods.
