You may have heard that the most recent version of Adobe Digital Editions (version 4; released on Sept. 8, 2014) is transmitting unencrypted information* about patron use of downloaded ebooks.  If you installed the new version and downloaded any ebooks after September 8th, you should be aware that your information was transmitted unencrypted.

The American Library Association has called for Adobe to change the practice immediately. We support ALA’s call for action by Adobe to fully encrypt the information during transmission as well object to over-collection of personal information.

This does not concern streamed ebook content and only concerns ebooks or portions of ebooks that have been downloaded to a device using Adobe Digital Editions version 4. You may wish to install Adobe Digital Editions version 3 instead.

We will update you when we have more information.

*Information includes title, user ID, device ID, device IP address, certified app ID, distributor ID, AdobeContent Server operator URL, date purchased or downloaded, the duration for which the book has been read, and the percentage of the book that has been read.
