5/15 12:00pm Windows PCs & Ransomware

You may have read news articles about a global ransomware attack.  All Windows computers are vulnerable and must be patched.  Windows computers need at least the March Windows Updates.  Most College PCs should have this patch downloaded already, but you may need to install it and reboot.  See our instructions to check if your Windows PC is patched.  If you have Windows XP or version 8 (8.1 is fine), please contact the Help Desk for assistance.

Other tips to stay safe from ransomware:

  • Do not click suspicious links in email.
  • Do not open shared Google documents or email attachments unless you are expecting them and follow up with the sender when in doubt.
  • If you are prompted for a software update while browsing the web, make sure it is legitimately from the source (e.g. Adobe Flash).  When in doubt, contact the Help Desk.
