New! Google Drive File Stream to sync docs locally

Drive File Steam is the replacement for the old Drive client that allows you to download and work on Google docs on your computer, and have the version on Google’s server automatically updated.

  • The old Google Drive Client will continue to work until March 2018.
  • If you’re currently using the Drive client, when you reboot you may get an option to upgrade to Drive File Stream or cancel/upgrade later.
  • See more about installing Drive File Stream: http://bit.ly/2xJZ7W6
  • Drive File Stream creates a placeholder on your computer—when you open a doc, it downloads it, so it saves space on your computer by only downloading the docs you’re using.
  • You can also set it up to download and sync all of your files, same as the Drive client.
  • Syncing with Team Drive is view-only (edits made on your computer won’t sync back to Drive).
  • If you’re using the Backup & Sync app, you can keep using it or switch to Drive File Stream (contact the Help Desk).
