7/25 Beware of a password scam asking for bitcoins

Beware of a current scam where the subject includes a password you have used in the past (most likely in an external system such as Yahoo!), and they demand you pay a large ransom in bitcoin.  In addition, the email threatens that they will release a recorded video of you taken through malware using your computer’s camera to a number of your contacts. It is highly unlikely that the scammer installed malware on your computer or recorded you through your webcam.

DO NOT pay the scammer.  Report the email as phishing by clicking on the arrow icon or three-dot button next to the reply button and click Report Phishing.

DO change your password everywhere you still use the one listed in the email.  Also, while the hacker didn’t get into your computer, we strongly encourage you to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (VPN required if you’re off-campus) and run a full scan.

If you receive such an email and have further questions or concerns, please contact the LTS Help Desk at helpdesk@wellesley.edu.
