AS – Networking Experience #4

The Nature Conservancy in New Zealand

おはようございます!My fourth Ted Wang interviewee is from New Zealand. She became interested in Japan while working as a tour guide for international tourists. As her career progressed and she became a lawyer, this interviewee worked as a corporate attorney in Japan. She now runs her own law firm where she assists a number of companies and law firms with legal work. Throughout our conversation, we discussed a number of topics relating to entrepreneurship, international law, and living as a foreigner in Japan.

Since I am applying to law schools this fall, I was especially interested in my interviewee’s experience of working in the international legal field. While she did experience some culture shock when she first came to Japan, she has truly enjoyed her time living in the country. One important aspect this interviewee noted was making connections. Japan, like most countries, relies heavily upon interpersonal networks for business. I know this is true in America as well, where approximately 70-80% of jobs are filled through personal and business connections. Therefore, foreigners in Japan have to be especially proactive about making connections through activities like joining clubs and social groups, and expanding your professional network. My interviewee was adamant that her business would not be able to survive without the connections she made in Japan over the years. She also emphasized that people with traits like flexibility, a willingness to listen and learn, and hard work generally succeed in her field.

Towards the end of our conversation, we discussed entrepreneurship and self-advocacy. It takes a lot of courage to start your own business in a foreign country, especially as a woman. I was really inspired by this interviewee’s confidence in herself and her abilities to start her own law firm. While running an international is certainly quite complicated, she has found it to be a rewarding and interesting experience.

I had a lovely time speaking with this interviewee and learned so much from her. Again, I would like to thank the Wellesley Tokyo Club for connecting me with this interviewee; their support has been invaluable throughout this project.

More pictures of New Zealand since it’s such a beautiful country! I would love to visit someday.
