Access Road Closure Behind Green/Founders

We are excited to begin the third phase of renovation work in Founders and Green Hall, which will create two humanities classrooms and a seminar room in the space where the Human Resources Office was previously located. (They have just moved down the hall in anticipation of this work.)

As we get ready for this work, please note:

  • The access road that runs between Green Hall and Founders Hall will be closed to vehicles during construction hours (see below schedule), beginning Monday, May 2.
  • The accessible drop off location at the back (east side) of Green Hall will remain open.
  • The access road that runs along the south side of Jewett will be closed to vehicles near the accessible entrance near the Jewett loading dock. Parking between Founders and Jewett will also be restricted.
  • Pedestrian access will remain open. Please use caution when walking near the project site.

Constructions hours:
May 2 to May 6: 3-11pm
May 9 to late August 2016: 7 am-3:30pm

Please refer to this map for additional information.

PNW and Founders/Green (Phase II) Renovations to Begin

As you may know, the Pendleton West campus renewal project and the second phase of the renovation of Founders and Green will get underway next week. As construction vehicles and work crews arrive at Wellesley next week, we anticipate these projects will cause minimal disruptions to your activities on campus this summer. Please be aware of the following changes, beginning next week.

Air Conditioning
On Monday and Tuesday, June 8 and 9, the air conditioning in Founders and Green will be offline. The air conditioning will be back online in Green Hall on Wednesday, June 10, but will remain off in Founders until the end of the month.

Parking, Roadways, and Walkways
Beginning on Monday, June 8, the Schneider Center Tennis Court Lot will be closed to faculty, staff, and student cars. It will remain closed until further notice.

The roadway from College Road up behind Pendleton Hall to Green Hall will become a two-way road beginning Monday, June 8, and through the duration of the PNW project. As such, cars will not be able to park along the hill.

The walkway between PNW and Jewett Arts Center leading up to the Academic Quad will be closed through August 2016 (the duration of the PNW project). Instead, you may access the Academic Quad by using the walkway between the Davis and Collins. We will also be creating a temporary walkway on the Munger Meadow side of College Road for pedestrian traffic, as the sidewalk on the opposite side of College Road will be closed during construction. These changes will be implemented in the coming weeks.

For more information about these roadway changes, please see the site logistics plan below. For more details about campus renewal, please see the Campus Renewal website.

Founders/Green: Move-In Ready

Just as there is excitement across campus today as first year students move in to their residence halls, there is also much excitement in Founders and Green halls today as faculty move in to newly renovated offices there.

After a rigorous eight weeks, the renovations in Founders/Green this summer are nearly complete. You may continue to see some minor construction activity into September, as the finishing touches are made.

The work this summer brought together academic departments in one location, updated faculty offices, modernized classrooms, and improved the accessibility of these buildings—including installing a new ramp on the second floor above the iconic archway and widening the corridors. A new all-gender bathroom was added to the 2nd floor and the bathroom on the 4th floor was replaced with a new handicapped-accessible facility.

The next phase of work scope in Founders/Green—work that will be finalized in the coming months—will begin next summer.

Here is a glimpse of some of the renovated spaces…

An Update on Founders/Green

Three-quarters of the way through the first phase of a multiphase renovation of Founders and Green halls, and work continues at a steady pace. This summer, the project in “Green Hall South” and “Founders Hall North” is being completed to update faculty offices, classrooms, and common spaces on the second, third, and fourth floors, bringing together academic departments and improving accessibility.

Earlier this summer, in the Spanish Department area of the fourth floor, crews unearthed a large block wall, previously concealed beneath the walls, that they had to remove block by block. Other than that minor setback, work has continued on time and on budget throughout the summer.

The renovations are expected to be completed in time for the start of the fall semester.

Construction Updates for the Week of 6/23

Starting early next week (Monday or Tuesday, June 23 or 24) there may be minor traffic interruptions as a work crew mobilizes in front of the Physical Plant. This will include moving a large excavator, fencing and other miscellaneous tools down from the Quad to the front of the plant.

In addition, toward the end of the week, we are expecting deliveries of large concrete precast trench sections to the construction site on the Hazard Quad, which may briefly disrupt the flow of traffic on College Road, near the Route 135 entrance. When the trucks carrying the large trench sections arrive, Campus Police will be on hand to direct traffic, although you may experience some delays as the large trucks make their way up to the Quad.

Reminder about Founders/Green
Anyone who works in Founders or Green Halls knows that demolition activity has been well underway in the passage between the two buildings. As a reminder, portions of the buildings will be closed this summer. Please note:

  • There will be no passage from Green to Founders on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors; that same area on the first floor will be open.
  • The stair tower and elevator will remain open and in use this summer.
  • The entrance to the building by El Table will be open and the nearby elevator on that level (accessible by the ramp) will be in use.
  • The stairwell near El Table will be closed.
  • The road that goes under the Green Hall archways will need to be closed periodically, while a new ramp to improve accessibility is installed.

Founders/Green Renovations: A Primer for the Summer

With administrative offices moving into the newly renovated Schneider Center this week, we officially begin the first phase of a multi-phase renovation project in Founders and Green halls.

This first phase of work will be completed this summer, and will be generally focused on the area of the buildings informally known as “Green Hall South” and “Founders Hall North.” Renovations will bring together academic departments in one location, update faculty offices and classrooms, create more common spaces, and improve the accessibility of these historic and iconic buildings.

What You Can Expect
The work this summer in Founders/Green will be noisy. Construction workers will generally be in the building Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., and they strive to do the more disruptive activity earlier in the morning.

Beginning this week and throughout the duration of the project this summer, portions of Green and Founders will be closed. Please note:

  • There will be no passage from Green to Founders on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors; that same area on the first floor (by the Office of Human Resources) will be open.
  • The stair tower and elevator will remain open and in use this summer.
  • The entrance to the building by El Table will be open and the nearby elevator on that level (accessible by the ramp) will be in use.
  • The stairwell near El Table will be closed.

Additionally, the road that goes under the Green Hall archways will need to be closed periodically, while a new ramp to improve accessibility is installed.

Summer Moves
This summer, three academic departments—East Asian Languages and Cultures, Spanish, and French—will move out of the building until the renovation work is complete. Faculty and staff in those departments can best be reached by email over the summer.

Additionally, HR will relocate temporarily this summer just down the hall on the first floor of Green Hall, to the space where Student Financial Services has recently moved out of. HR will return to their existing offices at the end of the summer.
