Field House Renovations: KSC Hours and Equipment Relocation

As we get ready to close the Field House for renovations (from March 20 through December), we want to remind the College community that the primary space that will be closed during this time is the Dorothy Towne Field House. The Field House is one of three buildings within the larger Nannerl O. Keohane Sports Center (KSC) complex. The Recreation and Pool buildings will remain open generally during this time, although there will be limited closures as we work to update the fire protection systems as required by the Town of Wellesley.

This site logistics plan (click the image to enlarge it) details the flow of traffic and pedestrians during the renovations of the Field House.

KSC Hours
Standard KSC hours will be maintained for Spring Semester although they will vary during spring break, reading period, finals and summer session.

  • Sunday, 12pm-10pm
  • Monday through Thursday, 7am-11:30pm
  • Friday, 7am-10pm
  • Saturday, 10am-6pm

It is important to note that general scheduling of spaces will be limited during this time and should be done through 25Live.  All up-to-date schedules can be found throughout the project on the PERA website.

Physical education classes, recreational programs, athletics practices and competitions, employee wellness classes, as well as individual access to the strength & conditioning, cardio-fitness equipment and pool will continue with as few disruptions as possible.  Select physical education classes and recreation programs, will be postponed and/or relocated to alternate campus locations.  Select varsity athletics activities will be relocated to three nearby institutions and/or off campus facilities during renovation.

Key Relocation Information

  • General KSC access – The main doors to the Recreation Building, as well as the doors below the first bridge, will be accessible throughout the entire duration of the renovation project.
  • Physical Education class locations will be communicated through the registration process and listed on the PERA website.
  • Strength training & limited cardio equipment will be accessible in the lower level of the KSC.  This is the only location available for faculty, staff and alumnae use during renovation.
  • Spinning bikes will be relocated to a glassback squash court in the lower level of the KSC.
  • Cardio equipment (18 pieces currently located in the “cardio corner” of field house) will be relocated to Cazenove Residence Hall – Dining Area.  Since this equipment is within a residence hall, it will be designated for student use only.  The space will be card-swipe accessible seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. with limited exceptions for scheduled Physical Education classes.  All times will be posted outside the space.
  • Recreational indoor tennis will be postponed during renovation.  Outdoor courts at the west end of campus are available.
  • Commencement (indoor rain location) will be relocated to a tented enclosure on Severance Green.
  • Chandler Pool will be closed June 9-27 and August 9-31 for building code upgrades.
  • As noted in the image above, Field House renovations will affect the exterior area immediately surrounding the Field House. The existing access walkway (adjacent to the south side of the Field House) will be closed for the majority of the project.  Pedestrian access from the KSC vehicular loop (near parking garage) to the D parking lot will be made available via a temporary pathway located along the upper practice field. The sidewalk on Rt 135 will remain accessible during renovations and will serve as the alternate walkway around the KSC.

Exercise Your Opinion on the Field House

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to the Dorothy Towne Field House of the Keohane Sports Center to learn more about the planned renovations, view a series of renderings, ask questions, and provide input for select project decisions pertaining to types of cardio equipment, floor coloring, and logo/banner placements.

On Wednesday, March 12, 12:30-1:30 p.m. and Thursday, March 13, 7-8 p.m. community members can meet with the Field House Design Team, Turner Construction Company, and Chris Sgarzi, AIA Principal from Sasaki Associates to give input and feedback on the upcoming work in the Field House.
