TSSL Themes

The TSSL grant focuses on the following themes: identity, environment, and democracy. These themes inform all of the grant’s activities, especially humanities curricular reform and faculty working group topics.

Identity

How can the humanities open new ways to think about identity—for example, by creating, analyzing, and performing adaptations and translations?

How do narratives reconcile identity with transformation?

What kinds of spaces can create a sense of freedom to adapt and to make bold connections?

Environment

How can the humanities help us better understand and reshape our relations to the natural and the built environment?

How do the humanities approach the concept of nature?

Can we create and study effective narratives about climate change, to create hope instead of apathy?

Democracy

How can the study of ancient texts help us understand the current fragility of democracy?

How do we assess and create truly democratic spaces, using arts and architecture as a study and guide?

Can we embrace the classroom, the campus, and the production of knowledge as sites for strengthening and practicing democracy?
