This week was Africa Week! It’s a part of Wellesley’s African Students Association (WASA) Black History Month celebrations. It seeks to bring awareness to African’s culture, politics, and students at Wellesley’s campus.
On Monday, I attended an Art Exhibit by a Nigerian photographer named Stephanie Nnamani. She came to show us her project entitled GLASS. They are a series of photos taking behind the glass of windows in Enugu and Abuja, Nigeria. As an e-board member on WASA, I helped set up for the event and was able to see before all the wonderful images Stephanie captured in Nigeria.
Here are some of (not so good) photos from the event
The event was very relaxed and we spent most of the time talking to Stephanie and learning about her journey. We spoke about school, the concept of home (which is what GLASS is about), and being in college. Stephanie gave us some advice about choosing the career you would like, advice that I feel what very timely for me. She also discussed the need to create space for artists to create especially in places like Nigeria where she hopes the government will get more involved in supporting artists.
I’d been following Stephanie for a while now and was very excited to meet her. It was really cool to see that she was just as amazing in real life as she is online.
