Happy Autumn! Here’s this week’s playlist: http://8tracks.com/samgit/autumn-2013

It’s been a busy week here at Wellesley. These past few days especially, I think I’ve been able to take advantage of what Wellesley has to offer. The close-enough-to-Boston location and academic as well as extracurricular activities offered to students here is very different from what I was exposed to in high school. Here’s a quick rundown of my wide-ranging activities….

 I attended the Wilson Lecture.IMG_0721

The Wilson Lecture was funded by Carolyn Ann Wilson (Class of 1910) in 1962 in hopes “to engage the Wellesley community in the most significant issues of the day”.
The speaker was Carolyn S. Miles, the CEO of Save the Children. She talked to us about how her organization is leading initiatives in various parts of the world to engage communities in improving early childhood education and health.

I touched pig lungs and dissected a calf heart.

This one isn’t for the faintest of hearts (no pun intended) – in Lab for my biology class (Human Bio 109) we are learning about the cardiovascular system. No big deal, we just dissected a calf heart which is approximately the same size of an adult human heart. This is a photo of a contraption that allows us to see the contraction and expansion of the lungs by stepping on a pump that carries air in to a set of pig lungs. ‘Twas awesome.

I attended a Spoken Word Poetry Event.

Ed Mabrey was the featured performer at Poetry Night in downtown Boston. I had never seen spoken word poetry in person, but my friend had found out about this event and we all decided to go. We got back on campus at around 2a.m. and I was late to my morning class the next day, but it was so worth it. You can find some of Ed’s performances on youtube check them out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwRphYeVraA

I had pretty good Japanese food.

The college Japan Club took a trip Porter Square, a district in downtown Boston in Lesley University that is host of a bunch of Japanese restaurants. The photo above is of my dinner, Katsu-karé or pork cutlet curry.

4/5 stars.

Not going to lie, I am starting to get a bit homesick. I miss my family, my neighborhood, the delicious food…but whenever I start feeling a little reminiscent and lonely, I just remind myself of the great opportunities an people I’ve encountered here (already) in the last month and a half of Wellesley life. Also, knowing that winter break isn’t too far away helps as well. The college transition isn’t easy, but keeping myself busy (but NOT stressed out) is really helping with the process. Prospies don’t fret, you will find your niche here.
