Marathon Fun!

I know you’ve probably heard all about the marathon…

But have you heard about the FIRST woman to run it?

Bobbi Gibbs, speaking in the science center.

In 1966, Bobbi Gibbs became the first woman to ever run the Boston Marathon. And I got to hear her speak at Wellesley last week! I’m so jealous of myself!!! 😉

Can I just say, she is SO COOL. She’s done everything. She went to Tufts, was pre-med, and studied physics. But she couldn’t get into medical school because she was a woman. So she married a doctor and read all of his text books. Then she became a lawyer. And now, after an impressive career, she’s changed tracks again, becoming a neuroscientist and part-time, incredibly-talented sculptor! Whaaaat? All of the things!

She told us about her experience training for the marathon. Basically, she drove across the country, running everywhere and camping out under the stars. (My idea of heaven.)

At the end, someone asked her where her favorite place to run was…

Her answer? “Planet Earth.”

I literally want to be her.

The talk was during practice time but our coach felt that it would be a fun thing for the team to go to, so we had practice rescheduled and we all went to hear her speak together.

W’s up!

Honestly, hearing her talk was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had. She is such a character! I can only hope that someday I am half as accomplished and twice as crazy.

Let’s be real, I think Wellesley is preparing me well for that;)
