Peanut Butter Trouble

Charlie Brown once said, “Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love.” Well for me, nothing puts the taste back into peanut butter quite like that first creamy spoonful. Of course by spoonful, I mean fingerful.

I have no shame to admit that my keyboard often has a lingering smell of freshly ground nuts simply because I love to eat peanut butter straight from the jar and right off my finger. I don’t have classes on Tuesdays, so I often snooze through breakfast. Since it’s the most important meal of the day, I obviously have to supplement myself and that’s where the good ole PB comes in.

Most dining halls at Wellesley are open all day. They don’t always have meals, but there is always fruit, a salad bar, drinks, coffee (a must on a college campus), tea, and thanks to our ice cream foundation, always six tubs of ice cream.

Generally there are fixings for sandwiches and toast as well. I happen to be a gluten-free vegetarian (okay, so I cheated for Thanksgiving), so I live near the Tower complex, which is one of the larger dining halls and accommodates my special diet. Tower has a vegan station, gluten sensitive station, sandwich bar and usually some funky salads or special hummus.

The downside, of course, is that it’s a nut free dining hall. That’s not to say we don’t have our nutty Wellesley students. I’ll be the first to admit I’m one of them. We don’t, however, have any peanut butter or nut products. For a PB and breakfast enthusiast such as myself, sometimes this becomes an issue. Especially when my boyfriend and I are deciding where to brunch on campus, as the closest peanut butter available would be in the Kosher-vegetarian dining hall. We’re often in the pickle of, “Meat, or peanut butter?” For times when meat wins, I keep a jar of peanut butter in my room.

I highly recommend the following clip from Meet Joe Black (a favorite film of mine) to help you visualize just how much I enjoy my PB.

I’m off to clean myself up. I was supposed to give myself a manicure today. I wonder if peanut oil is good for cuticles.
