Marathon Monday

Marathon Monday is one of Wellesley’s most famous traditions. It so happens that Wellesley College is approximately the halfway point for the Boston Marathon. The Marathon falls on Patriot’s Day every year, classes are cancelled, and almost all of the campus comes out to support the runners. As early as 8 am, students, friends and faculty line up on Route 135 to cheer for the runners. Traditionally, students would hand orange slices to the runners when they passed by. In more recent years, students have taken to kissing the runners as they go by! Students design their own posters, with saying like “Kiss me, I’m from the South!”

Even student organizations and residence halls design sweatshirts and t-shirts to celebrate the event. While the Marathon is going on, the College hosts a barbeque on Munger Meadow, with burgers, music and even a bouncy house:

The evening of Marathon Monday, the Schneider Board of Governors (SBOG)—a student organization that hosts numerous social events on campus, hosts a concert. This past Monday, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis came to perform, the auditorium filled to capacity, and the show was incredible. Marathon Monday is only one of many on-campus, social events this month hosted by SBOG. Tuesday night, was LipSync (a huge lip sync contest, no surprise there) and the festivities are sure to continue!
