Family weekend !

Although I was just home, my mother and grandmother decided to pop over to Wellesley for family and friends weekend. The weekend is filled with events for parents and friends who come to visit their Wellesley student. It was a way for me to show my family the places I talk about so much when I am at home. I showed them Café Hoop, the Lake, the Davis Museum and a bunch of other places.

They were dismayed by the number of stairs and how large the campus was. While on campus, my family attended a couple different events on campus. Wellesley sets up many things for people to do like attend games, concerts, tours of the campus and opportunities to go to the boathouse. The first thing my family did attended was a Yanvalou concert. Yanvalou is a drum and dance group that performs the folkloric music of Haiti and African Diaspora. I joined Yanvalou at the beginning of my senior year and have been enjoying it. My family is Haitian so they were very familiar with a lot of the music Yanvalou performs. I even caught my mom and grandmother singing along. They were also grinning the whole time. They actually saw Yanvalou perform twice. We also performed at Taste of the Diaspora; an event put on by Harambee House for parents during the weekend. It also included lots of food.

After that, my family and I ended the day at the observatory. The Astronomy club was hosting a viewing night with hot chocolate. They offered a sky tour by pointing out different objects that were viewable in the night sky. I took an astronomy class my Sophomore Fall so I knew a lot of what the guide was pointing out. After that, they opened up the telescopes and allowed visitors to view through them. I got to see Saturn!

We spent the second day of the weekend eating brunch and visiting the Davis museum before my family headed their way back home. Although I got no homework done this weekend, I had a lovely time with my family. It was fun to show them around and have them experience a little bit of what Wellesley is like.

–until next time,
