Japan Club presents: Yuki Matsuri 2014

I just had an insanely busy weekend. It was a long one too, with Presidents’ Day, but I could’ve used another day off. It’s Wednesday and I’m feeling very sleep deprived.

BUT, it was worth it because Saturday, Japan Club (of which I am on the executive board) hosted our annual “Snow Festival” event.

As a member of the e-board, I was involved with making decorations (as well as the photobooth cutout pictured above), taking pictures during the event, and learning a little dance to perform at the end of the event with the rest of the group. The dance was a bit embarrassing but we were all cracking up during the whole thing. It was great.

It may not be accurate, but I want to say nearly 400 people came, including Wellesley College students and faculty, Wellesley locals, as well as dedicated and wonderful students from other colleges. With the snow storm that had commenced at around 10 am, we thought the turn out would be considerably smaller than past years. I had no past experience of course so I had no clue what to expect. I definitely didn’t expect the line of people to be so long that it reached from the basement of the campus center to half way through the first floor!

Yuki Matsuri, Japanese for Snow Festival, is a fun and interactive occasion to celebrate Japanese traditions and of course, food. This year was its 10th anniversary, so we even played a game of “Russian Roulette” where 10 players each at a small riceball, in one of which there is a ridiculous amount of wasabi. I was excused from playing because a) I was taking photos but more because b) I can’t stand wasabi. How do people, Japanese or foreign, eat that stuff?

I’m so grateful that I got to see friends from home, and that my sempai (Japanese for someone older than you whom you respect) is right here at Wellesley, looking after me. I love being a part of Japan Club ^_^ It is my little family away from family.
