Free Teeth (For 26 Hours)

I got my braces off on Tuesday! This was, by far, the most exciting part of my week. I had braces for a little over two years, plus jaw surgery in May, so I’m immensely glad to have finished treatment. My teeth look like a whole new set.

For 26 glorious hours, my teeth were free. I ate popcorn and gummies and bit into apples (which I’ve, uh, kinda been doing all along, but it was more fun without the risk of breaking things). Then I went to pick up my retainers, which I will wear around the clock for the next six months, except for when I’m eating or brushing my teeth. So much for teeth freedom, right? (But please wear your retainers. Too many people have told me that they stopped wearing theirs and things got weird.) Taking the retainers off is kind of an ordeal. I stick my fingers in the back of my mouth and, after some trouble, extract these clear plastic things full of my saliva. It’s not attractive.

Me post-braces, pre-retainers!

Yesterday I got my hair trimmed, which meant I stared at my perfect teeth in the mirror for thirty minutes, trying to be discreet about it so no one would mistake me for a hungry carnivore salivating over the sight of prey. There was no prey, and I am not a carnivore. I was just appreciating my teeth. They’re so straight! And so smooth!

I just finished listening to Mindy Kaling’s audiobook Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? I stumbled upon a hard copy in Wellesley’s library in September and added it to my want-to-read list. The audiobook was great, since Mindy read it herself. I think I’ve inserted a bit of her writing style into this post. The best part was that she added parts specifically to the audiobook, like a line in the beginning about how you’d finish it in two days, especially since you didn’t actually have to read anything, and something toward the end about how you were missing out on the photos in the print version. I might have to find it in the library again.

My mom and I went into the attic this morning. We haven’t been up there in years. It was very cold and full of empty cardboard boxes, which we threw (more like squeezed) down the ladder to finally recycle. Our trash was just picked up today, and the bins are already full.

I finally added my spring classes to my Google Calendar. I love a good Google Calendar.

Google Calendar week

My class schedule for next semester!

I’m making steady progress through my Portuguese textbook and it’s starting to dawn on me that I’ll be in an actual Portuguese class very soon. Classes start two weeks from Monday.

Next week I’ll be writing from Florida! For now, enjoy this week’s dog pic.
