Things I love that are yellow (hello, class of 2027!)

Congratulations to the newly admitted class of 2027! (That sounds like a fake year.) As a yellow class, you’ll be replacing me and my 2023 classmates. You have big yellow shoes to fill.

If yellow is already your favorite color, then go you; your timing is perfect. If not, I suspect it will grow on you, even if your orientation t-shirt spends the entire semester at the bottom of your drawer.

Here are some wonderful things that are yellow:

  • Golden delicious apples
  • The lacrosse ball I use to massage my back
  • Just Egg (vegan omelets have come so far)
  • Daffodils in front of Stone-Davis
  • Mango (the inside)
  • Bananas
  • Plantains
  • My retro yellow Wellesley sweatshirt that one of my favorite dining hall workers recognizes from the ‘80s
  • Pineapples
  • The Lorax
  • Sunshine
  • Minions
  • Empachers
  • Cape Cod corn in the summer
  • Google Keep (I love a good checklist)
  • The yellow elevator in Sci (I call it the yellowvator and took it for the first time just so I could make that pun)
  • Vegan cheddar
  • Bumblebees
  • Half of my favorite color (orange)
  • The crew team’s Zesty Class of 2023

I applied to Wellesley early decision, so I don’t know what it’s like to have to decide between schools. It sounds fun! But also stressful. Know that your financial aid package is negotiable (submit the appeal form if something seems off), that it’s hard to go wrong, and that no college will be exactly as you expect it.

College in general has been less structured than I imagined. There’s no form to sign when you leave campus or time you have to be back in the dorm. No one will look at your degree requirements and pick your courses for you (though your advisors will be happy to help!). If you miss class, your professor probably won’t chase you down with notes or ask for an explanation. I love the freedom to set my own schedule.

College is a good time to figure out what makes you happy and prioritize those things. Parties? Movie nights? Curling up with a book before the sun has entirely set? Whatever works, hold it near.

You’ll have the freedom to explore how you study best. In the living room with friends? In a quiet library cubicle? In the mornings, afternoons, evenings, or nights? Will you be one of those people I see working when I leave the dorm for 4:45 a.m. practice? Will you be leaving, like me, for 4:45 a.m. practice? Or will you be sleeping peacefully, warm and cozy in bed, blissfully unaware that anyone is awake at that ungodly hour?

College is your time to decide.
