Vaccination Station

Hello, blog! Today, I have an exciting announcement: I’m getting vaccinated! Cue the cheers, applause, etc.

Massachusetts officially moved into stage three earlier this week, and Anastasija and I were able to snag appointments in Boston tonight. Wellesley is making an exception on their Boston-travel ban for vaccination purposes, and a couple of upperclassmen set up a ride network where older students with cars could drive other students to their vaccination appointments to avoid the required quarantine that comes with usage of public transportation or ride share apps.

Iowa’s vaccine rollout happened a little bit faster than Massachusetts- given we have about half the population- so most of my family is already vaccinated. My little brother is the exception, given that he isn’t sixteen yet. Wellesley hasn’t announced any sort of requirement for students to be vaccinated in the fall, but it is being highly encouraged and I wouldn’t be incredibly surprised if we ended up joining the colleges and universities who have made it an official requirement.

In other Wellesley news, last night was chicken tender night at Late Night, which never fails to make me a happy camper. Sometimes I feel like this blog verges into the slightly dangerous territory of a Wellesley College Food Blog, but at a college as residential as Wellesley is, the dining halls are a super important part of your college experience! Something like 97% of Wellesley students live on campus all four years, and with on campus living comes a required unlimited meal plan. This isn’t even mentioning the lack of worthy chicken tender joints in the town of Wellesley; it’s the little things like chicken tender nights and Wednesday chocolate chip pancakes that really keep me going. Speaking of chocolate chip pancakes, Tower had the thickest, most beautiful chocolate chip pancakes I’ve seen all school year yesterday morning. Tears may have been shed, they were that good. See the header of this post for a new ice cream flavor at Lulu: salted caramel cookies and cream!

This week has been rough draft week for my first paper in my First Year Writing class, which has led to quite a bit of listening to Orson Welles’s old radio show- and in case any of you are wondering, yes I do agree that the choice to focus in on Sydney Carton during their rendition of A Tale of Two Cities was the right move- and also quite a lot of Webkinz. I think I’ve actually managed to log into Webkinz World everyday for a week straight now. That would have been an accomplishment at nine; at nineteen, it speaks a little bit too much to my current stress levels. I have a meeting with my professor tomorrow morning to do a little bit of get-to-know-you and to talk about my rough draft, which I’m excited about, though I’m more excited by the fact that rough drafts and one-on-one meetings means no class tomorrow! I will be utilising that time to practice carillon and read ahead for my Global Crime Fiction class, as any Mature and Responsible College Student would.

My Global Crime Fiction class is actually super awesome and definitely my favorite class I’ve taken at Wellesley so far; it has also made me finally surrender in my battle against being an English major. Somehow while actively campaigning my unwillingness to succumb to the department, I accidentally fulfilled almost a third of the major requirements. Clearly, there’s been a bit of a disconnect between the things I think I want to be doing and the things I actually want to be doing.

Course registration for rising sophomores- w o w, it is so weird to think of myself as anything other than a first year- is May 6th, which means I’ve already created three different schedules since the Course Browser opened on Saturday and am doomed to create at least three more before I actually enroll myself in classes for next fall. Things are changing, time is moving, the earth is turning! Lately the passage of time has seemed both faster and less terrifying to me, which is probably some normal part of growing up that no one ever told me about. It feels like I blink and a week of classes has already gone by, and every week brings me closer to being back in Iowa again! As much as I love Wellesley, I can’t wait to go home for the summer. I’m sure I’ll be just as excited to be back at Wellesley again in the fall.

Sending you joy!
