Weekly Highlights

Hello hello!

We’re on week three, and I had my first (!) exam of this semester yesterday. How, I’m not sure, but regardless, this week just flew by. We’re already halfway through this month.

Some highlights from the past week:

  • I recently acquired two new plants for my room! Ever since coming back from abroad, I’ve been procrastinating decorating my single in Beebe. My excuse: minimalism goes a long way. Recently, however, I went to a Hillel bagel brunch event that was Tu B’Shvat themed. For those unfamiliar, Tu B’Shvat is a celebration about the ‘New Year of the Trees’. During the bagel brunch, there were pots and seeds provided, and we could make and take home our very own plants! So, I’d like you to meet my two new plants: Jo and Laurie aka Basil and Parsley (also yes, I was inspired to name them after watching Little Women on Friday night because it was so, so good).

Nothing yet, but hopefully soon…

  • I had a wonderful dinner with my big on Monday night. I hadn’t caught up with her in a while (she was abroad last Spring, I was abroad last Fall), so it was great to reconnect over a cozy meal at Pom.
  • This semester, I’m trying to attend one talk/lecture every week, in an area outside my major and minor. This week, I trekked over to the Newhouse Center for the Humanities for an event titled Losing Laroche: The Story of the Only Black Passenger on the Titanic. I (along with the rest of the world, it seems) have always had a strange fascination with the Titanic. I remember reading as much as I could about it as a child and visiting a special museum exhibit solely dedicated to the Titanic in middle school (in addition to, of course, falling in love with the movie). So I was curious to hear about this passenger and learn more about his life, as well as the intersections between race and social mobility in the 20th century. Professor Carter Jackson was incredible, and brought so much curiosity and insight to this talk. There were not only students, but also professors, faculty, and staff in attendance!

My week also consisted of facilitating a class discussion for my seminar on decision-making, lots of late night gym sessions, and creating a website in HTML/CSS for my CS 220 problem set. All great things, but I’m looking forward to catching my breath a bit this weekend.

Enjoy the sunshine (and the three day weekend),

Shreya
