I had such a fun and adventure-packed trip last weekend that I’m not done blogging about it! Every summer my family has a reunion in Little Compton, RI; we get a break from the city and get to spend some quality time at the beach. Unfortunately, half of the family couldn’t make it to our family reunion, but I got to spend some quality time with my mom, my sister, and my cousin. On Saturday morning, my sister and I made breakfast for everyone, and I was able to practice my cooking skills (aka microwaving frozen sausages). After breakfast, we drove down to Westport to go paddle boarding. We had been to this place a couple years ago and my sister insists that I kept falling down last time we went paddle boarding, but I have no recollection of anything of the sort. There was definitely a learning curve and a lot of wobbling happening, but it was still really fun! My sister and I made it through without falling in, the same cannot be said for my mom (she got absolutely soaked—it was hilarious, but we were trying not to laugh). We had to paddle around some Canadian geese that were hanging out on the water, and I wondered if they knew the geese that hang out on campus by the lake.
After paddleboarding my sister and I were able to successfully convince my mom to take us to an ice cream stand we used to go to when we were little. My sister and I are both lactose intolerant, but that has never once stopped us. Since we were already wet from paddleboarding, we decided to go to the beach next. It was cold and windy so not an ideal tanning experience, but we did get the beach almost entirely to ourselves.
Once we got back to the house, we had to spend some quality time with the man (dog) of the hour, Bruce! My grandma was unfortunately unable to come to our family reunion but we hung out with her dog in her absence, and he provided us with some entertainment value. He is not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he loves a good game of fetch. My sister and I tossed a ball around with him for a while, and after taking our eyes off him for literally two minutes, we found him rummaging through the neighbor’s garden (again, not the brightest bulb).
Overall it was a very relaxing day and a great way to balance out my Providence adventures. Getting away to Rhode Island is a great way to get off campus for a weekend, there’s so much to do and you don’t necessarily need a car! If I had the option, I totally would’ve spent more time in Providence, and I will definitely be trying a weekend trip like this again when I come back from my time abroad.
