You’ve Gotta Network to Get Work

The reality of today’s job market is that 70-80% of jobs are found through connections and/or networking. So as it turns out, it’s not what you know, but who you know. Meaning, that sometimes to land that job or internship, you’ll need to leverage your connections and network, in addition to that fantastic resume you’re building as a Wellesley student.

But, we also realize that there are common misperceptions, myths and excuses about networking and we want to start by squashing them.

  1. I don’t know anyone.  Yes you do! Friends, family, other Wellesley students, Wellesley alumnae that visit campus to engage with you, co-workers from summer jobs or internships. These people are all part of your ever-growing network.
  2. I don’t have time. Wellesley is a busy place: there is so much to do and not enough hours in the day. However, networking is a critical investment in your future career.  The hour or two you spend at that alumnae career panel or by accessing the W network to request an informational interview just may put you on the road to your next job or internship.
  3. I don’t know what to talk about. Of course you do. You simply need to ask questions about the other person. Focus on learning about them and what they do. Not sure what to ask? Check out our networking resources or come to a drop-in to speak with a CWS counselor.
  4. Talking to people I don’t know at events is uncomfortable/not fun. Networking is a challenge for many of us because it forces us to step outside of our comfort zone and do something that may not come naturally. Your ability to network will improve the more you practice. Go to an event with an outgoing friend who enjoys meeting new people or just loves talking to alumnae and watch and learn from her.
  5. Insert your excuse here. Stop making excuses. Networking means building relationships with people and sharing information. You’ll meet interesting people, learn new things and have a reason to brag about your accomplishments!

So, you’re probably asking yourself, how do I build my network from here inside the Wellesley bubble? Stay tuned for next week’s blog announcement when we reveal our fall line-up of CWS-Wellesley College Alumnae Association events, happening here on campus in October and November.  ES
