Alumna in Residence for Law

Please join the Pre-Law Society and the Center for Work and Service for a tea with Camila Alarcon ‘98 on Friday October 19th. Ms. Alarcon graduated Wellesley in 1998 with a degree in English and Women’s Studies and earned her JD from Boston University School of Law in 2003.

Currently Ms. Alarcon is Of Counsel at Withey Morris, PLC, in Phoenix, Arizona, where she practices in administrative, governmental and regulatory matters.  She has extensive litigation and appellate experience in state and federal court.  She has litigated over 200 administrative matters, and has drafted legislation, regulations and policies.  Previously, she worked at the Arizona Attorney General’s Office representing a variety of state agencies and boards that license businesses and professionals.  Ms. Alarcon began her legal career at Community Legal Services, where she represented migrant workers in employment disputes, and victims of domestic violence in high-conflict family law matters.

Start-up Panel
Wednesday, October 24
7:30pm-8:30 pm, PNW 212, with opportunity to network with alumnae at 8:30pm.

Please join the CWS and Computer Science department for a panel of Wellesley Alumnae working in start-ups in the Boston area. Alumnae will speak with students regarding what it is like to work at a start-up, how to get a job at a start-up, and advice on what to do if you would like to start a start-up of your own!  The alums come from a variety of backgrounds with majors in CS, IR, Economics, American Studies, English, and Sociology. Refreshments will be served.

Rudina Seseri ’00 is a Partner at Fairhaven Capital (a Venture Capital firm); Rudina majored in Economics and International Relations. Christina Dorobek ’08 is VP of Business Development at LevelUp; Christina was an American Studies and English major.  Kate Golder ’02 is the Project/Account Manager at a local start-up called Paydiant; Kate majored in Computer Science and Mathematics. Karin Robinson ’12 is a Support Engineer at HubSpot; Karin was a sociology major.

Terry’s work experience involves clients such as Proctor and Gamble, Clairol, Revlon, Vis ID, Elle Magazine, and the 2012 Olympics.  As Creative Director, Terry knows how to interpret fashion and beauty trends, using this information to create products and services that appeal to clients and consumers alike. Terry majored in anthropology and was an active member of the Ethos Choir.

Do you want a life full of choices, experiences, and options? Learning the basic of personal finances can help you open those doors.  In this kick-off session for the fall 2012 CWS Financial Fellow program, you will learn the essential money moves for a financially healthy life. We will focus on investing, budgeting, and credit card debt.

Using a framework of “Money Mantras” and “Money Myths,” Wellesley’s Manisha Thakor ’92 will inspire you to achieve your own personal state of what she likes to call “Money Zen.”  Coffee and dessert will be served.

Investing for Students

Investing can seem overwhelming on the surface. This lively talk will  demystify the process and leave you with a powerful keep-it-simple approach to maximizing your hard earned dollars. Learning the basics of Investing 101 is one of the best investments you can make in ensuring your golden years are truly golden. (For instance, you will learn the power step of investing that could result in 5x more money when you are ready to retire…hint, it’s a four-letter word!) This presentation will explore the basics of investing: what your options are, how to select amongst them, what types of accounts you can use, and how to decide how much to save and invest. And we’ll do it all with jargon-free language! Coffee and dessert will be served.

Student Loan Program

If you have undergraduate student loans (and are considering taking out additional loans for graduate school), you will not want to miss this session.

Afterwards we will talk about the key pitfalls to avoid and best moves to make when it comes to paying off your student loans. Student loans are serious business, so you’ll want to be on top of yours. We will also touch on credit card debt and credit scores. You will leave this session with a solid understanding of how to dominate your debt so debt does not dominate your life. A boxed lunch will be available at the end of the program.

Managing the Benefits Package from Your First (or Second!) Job

Powerful Women and Their Pocketbooks

Highly accomplished alumnae will share with us their best and worst money moves. In an intimate setting over tea, they will tell us what they wish they had known about money when they graduated from Wellesley and their top financial piece of advice for you. We will also open the discussion up for questions and invite you to raise whatever money issues that may be on your mind. You will leave this session with a much deeper understanding of the role that personal finance will play in your post-Wellesley life.

Sign up for a 25-minute “informational interview” on campus with Financial Fellow Manisha Thakor (’92) during set hours from November 5-8, inclusive. Get motivated to take your financial life to the next level.  Whether you have questions about how to most effectively keep learning about your personal finances post-graduation or you want to talk about what it is like to work in financial services, Manisha is eager to answer your questions. These sessions will be laid back and conversational – designed to help you make sense of money matters in your life.  Prior to founding the Women’s Financial Literacy Initiative, Manisha spend 15 years working in financial services as an analyst, portfolio manager, and client relations executive. She earned her MBA at Harvard Business School and is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charterholder. Most recently, Manisha launched Money Zen Wealth Management [www.moneyzen.com].
