CWS’ Top 5 Tips for Summer Housing

You’ve submitted your internship applications, you know where you’re headed (or at least, fairly sure), and now you’re thinking — where am I going to live? Take a look at our Top 5 Tips when planning your summer housing search.

1. Talk to your friends: Do you have friends heading to the same location? Do you already know people there? Having roommates can help reduce costs and make the summer safer and a lot more fun. Additionally, a local contact can refer you to people looking to sublet for the summer.

2. Know your location: Where does everyone live? How much does a rail pass cost? What’s happening in the neighborhood? Where’s the grocery store? Is it perceived as a safe place? Again, asking contacts in your social network can be helpful. Read local magazines/newspapers — what neighborhoods are mentioned?

3. Map out transit routes: Use. Google. Maps. Now. Do you live near public transit? How long does it take to get from where you want to live to your internship location? Map out where you need to be so you can budget your time accordingly. If you live in an area with a good bus/train system, living near a major bus/rail line is invaluable as you navigate your summer.

4. Know your budget: 30% is a good rule for housing — your rent/utilities should not cost more than 30% of your income. Remember: sometimes there are higher up-front costs (e.g.: security deposits for sublets, first/last month rent, purchasing new work clothes, a month pass for public transit) involved when you move to a new place. If you budget well, this will help you explore a new city, enjoy summer events, and help you in case you have any unexpected costs.

5. Trust your gut: If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Always tell someone where you’re going if you look at apartments AND take a friend with you. The buddy system is always a good way to stay safe and a second opinion can help with any decision making.
