Different organizations, foundations and companies send this information to the CWS in hopes that Wellesley women will take advantage of these opportunities and apply. Scholarships
- NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics The scholarships are for ethnic minorities and women interested in pursuing an advanced degree in a sports-related field. The NCAA awards 13 scholarships to ethnic minorities and 13 scholarships to women college graduates who will be entering their initial year of postgraduate studies. The one-time $6,000 scholarships are non-renewable grants awarded once per school year. Awardees of the scholarship must be entering their initial year of postgraduate studies during the 2013-14 academic year and have been accepted into a sports administration or other program that will help the applicant obtain a career in intercollegiate athletics. Awardees must be a full-time student at all times while using the award. Deadline to apply is December 6, 2012.
- The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides a $10,000 stipend for a graduating college senior to pursue one year of public service anywhere in the world. The award allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service activity for one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career. To apply, please develop a proposal for public service in this country or abroad. The proposal may encompass any activity that furthers the public good. It can be undertaken by yourself alone or by working through established charitable, religious, educational, governmental, or other public service organizations. Deadline to apply is January 18, 2013.
Fellowships
- Fall 2013 EPA Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships For Undergraduate Environmental Study – available to current sophomores The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships program, is offering undergraduate fellowships for bachelor level students in environmental fields of study. Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer of their junior year. The fellowship provides up to $20,700 per academic year of support and $8,600 of support for a three-month summer internship. Deadline to apply is December 5, 2012.
- Knowles Science Teaching Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2013 cohort of Science and Mathematics Teaching Fellows. The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) was created by Janet H. and C. Harry Knowles in 1999 to cultivate and support exemplary science and mathematics high school teachers and develop the next generation of leaders in education. The total award for each Fellow is valued at nearly $175,000 over the course of the five-year Fellowship. Fellows receive tuition assistance while participating in a teacher credential program, monthly stipends, and grants for professional development and teaching materials. - IDEX Accelerator is a career launch-pad for aspiring social enterprise practitioners. The 6 month program offers intense field experience and leadership training curriculum that equips fellows with the equivalent of 2 years marketable work experience that’s relevant to social enterprise employers. - The USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Fellowship is designed to attract outstanding young people to careers in international development as USAID Foreign Service Officers. The Payne Fellowship Program provides benefits valued at up to $90,000 over two years toward a two-year master’s degree, arranges internships on Capitol Hill and at USAID missions overseas, and provides professional development and support activities. Fellows who successfully complete the program become USAID Foreign Service Officers. Fellows may use the fellowship to attend a two-year master’s program in a U.S. institution to study an area of relevance to the USAID Foreign Service, including international development, international relations, public policy, business administration, foreign languages, economics, agriculture, environmental sciences, health, or urban planning at a graduate or professional school approved by the Payne Program. At the end of the two-year fellowship, Fellows enter the USAID Foreign Service. Applicants must be college seniors or graduates looking to start graduate school in the fall of the year they apply, have GPAs of at least 3.2 and be U.S. citizens. The program welcomes applications from those with any undergraduate major and encourages applications from members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the USAID Foreign Service and those with financial need. Summer Programs
- Manna Project International (MPI) connects young professionals and recent college graduates with international service opportunities to collectively apply their passions and education through service to communities in need. MPI’s model is a collaborative community-based approach to grassroots development, focused on three organizational pillars: holistic approach, community focus, and leadership development. At our international sites in Guatemala, Ecuador, and Nicaragua, Program Directors (PD) live and work together for seven to thirteen months implementing a range of community development projects in fields such as education, healthcare, agriculture and microfinance. There are two options to choose from — Program Directors: MPI is currently accepting applications for seven-month (January to August 2013) and thirteen-month (July 2013 to August 2014) Program Directors. For more information, click here. Summer Internship: Looking for a shorter-term opportunity in Latin America? MPI offers four- and eight-week summer internships. MPI summer interns assist Program Directors in running the day-to-day operations on the ground at our sites in Guatemala, Ecuador, and Nicaragua. For more information, click here. - The Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) The SR-EIP is a rigorous research experience designed specifically for undergraduates interested in applying to PhD or MD-PhD programs. Students work for eight to ten weeks in the summer under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor at a participating Leadership Alliance institution. Through one-on-one collaborations, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. All participants make oral or poster presentations of their research at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium. Students receive a stipend, and travel and housing expenses are covered by the host institution. SR-EIP participants are engaged in scholarly research projects offered at 22 Leadership Alliance member institutions. These programs also offer research seminars and workshops in professional development, as well as social and cultural activities. With one common application, students can apply for a research experience at up to three of the 22 research sites (see chart). Students should refer to each institution’s website for specific information on research opportunities and program requirements before submitting their application. - Cleveland Clinic Center For Reproductive Medicine Summer 2013 Internship The Summer Internship in the Center for Reproductive Medicine delivers a unique, intensive bench research experience that will give you a lifelong foundation of skills — and look great on your resume! As a Summer Intern, you will select a research project to work on from a list of several bench experiments in reproductive biology. Sample projects from past years have included study on Proteomic analysis of differential protein expression in mature and immature spermatozoa, the role of nitric oxide production on sperm signaling pathways, and catalase gene polymorphism analysis in male infertility. You will work on a research project alongside a team of other Summer Interns under the direction of a reproductive biologist. At the end of the program, you will prepare and deliver a presentation on your research project to your fellow interns and medical staff. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2013.
