We are living in an environment unlike one that we have seen since, perhaps, the McCarthy era.  Students, faculty and staff alike are scared that they, or their colleagues/classmates, will be arrested, detained, or deported.  Many are concerned that they, or their friends, will be targeted based on their gender identity, their visa status, or the exercise of their [free] speech.  Some are so fearful that they won’t leave their room or house.  Others have moved to other countries.  What are we to do to support others on our campus and in our communities?

First, we must stay informed without becoming obsessed.  Stay up on the news by spending a reasonable time reading and watching news sources that you trust.  Spending all day going down rabbit holes can be unhealthy, so do your best to balance your intake of the news along with getting together with friends and colleagues, eating healthy food, and getting exercise.

Next, make quality time for those that are fearful.  Listen to them, re-state to them what you hear them saying.  Ask them what they need.  Perhaps they need a smiling face, a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on.  Maybe they need help in identifying resources.  A student might need to talk with a faculty member or a staff member might want to speak with a supervisor, but they are reluctant.  Offer the help that you are able to give, whether it is a list of resources on and off campus, making a phone call to get some answers, or contacting representatives to assist.

People are hurting in so many ways – from family members losing jobs to friends losing their visa status.  They are concerned about their economic well-being as well as their mental and physical health. Some people are self-medicating in unhealthy ways just to cope.  We need to rally around each other and offer friendship and time.

If you or others are unable to identify the resources that might be helpful, please know that the Ombuds Office is available to assist you in exploring options.  Rather than worry and becoming obsessed with the unknown, try to take some positive steps that could help you and others.
