As I take my breaths and imagine roots stemming from my soles, I picture the red-brown concrete cracking and opening up to reveal soil rich with minerals. As my roots continue to extend, they find the roots of the red flowers in front of me, as well as the many unseen creatures burrowed below the surface. I wonder if they ever come up for air, and if they do, what do they think of the world above? Based on the quality of life of the trees, flowers and other plants around me, it’s very easy to deduce the health of everything below. I only wonder if there is something special in the soil that intensifies the color of everything that grows from it.
After a bit of research, I learned that the drinking water in Auckland is provided by Watercare, which is a New Zealand council-controlled organization. They get the water from dams, aquifers and aquifers and purify it before sending off to the millions of homes and businesses in Auckland. To be more specific, they take “raw water” from “storage dams in the Waitākere and Hūnua Ranges, an aquifer in Onehunga and the Waikato River” and transport it to their water treatment plants in order to make it completely safe and drinkable for Auckland residents.
I’ve also recently noticed that there is incredibly minimal pollution here, in all forms. It is even possible to see the stars in the center of the city due to the lack of light pollution. Energy doesn’t seem to be taken for granted. All outlets have a switch to turn the power on and off, and even our fridges will begin to loudly beep when they have been left open for more than a few minutes. The organization I previously mentioned also does a great job at maintaining the surrounding environment of the dams and rivers they take water from. For example, they are currently undergoing a 30 years restoration project to bring the surrounding ecology back to its original state by planting millions of native trees and plants. I love the amount of effort this org is putting into giving back to the reservoirs they take from.

That’s really interesting about the many sustainability features on appliances. I wonder when all of those began to be implemented and if it is countrywide or maybe just in big cities.
