The Green Apartment

I am not used to living in a city, but Córdoba is growing on me. Especially because of my host mom, who has filled our apartment with all sorts of greenery. She told me the other day that she bought the plants to keep her company and I can see why. They have a silent but persistent presence. I think that our house would feel different without them, more empty. I wonder how she keeps our plants healthy, because even though I love nature I do not have a green thumb. I had two cactuses and killed them both. The plants are here watching me type this. I hope that they don’t have hard feelings.

I apologized and they forgave me. Plants are like that. They spin sunshine into sugar. They are patient, never vulgar or unkind. I’m glad to find myself in a tiny oasis. The green apartment. I’m going to make this new place my home.

My host mom brought these flowers to lighten up the house.

  1. I keep thinking about the line you wrote on how plants spin sunshine into sugar — it’s such a poetic way to put it! Loved reading about your time in Córdoba and I can’t wait to hear more updates (and see more pictures)!
