South Africa faces significant challenges in terms of water conservation. The climate here is classified as semi-arid, with an average rainfall of 464mm a year. South Africa is ranked as one of the top 30 driest countries in the world. South Africa has many goals by 2030 for sustainable, clean, and safe drinking water.
They hope to achieve some of the following:
- Achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.
- Improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing the release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater, and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally.
- Increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.
- Implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate.
- Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management.
