One of my main goals for my study abroad experience was to engage with my local community in a fruitful and meaningful way. While I did end up pivoting the focus of my local engagement project, I am so grateful for the work I ended up doing and the community I was a part of as a result. I volunteered with an organization called Madboks, who works to end food waste by redistributing food surplus in Copenhagen. My experience with Madboks taught me so much about the importance of reducing food waste and how accessible food waste reduction can be. Madboks hosts weekly food box distribution events in a public government housing center. These boxes include fresh produce and bread, and are completely free of charge. It was shocking to see how much food would have been thrown out if it weren’t for this organization and to think of how many people would have gone hungry as a result. In exchange for time spent volunteering with Madboks, you are invited to take home a box as well. Madboks exemplifies the transformative power of a gift economy, and I hope I am able to encapsulate this in my presentation. It was an amazing experience to witness the community that has been built around this mission and the simple ways in which we can all help end hunger.
