Living on a literal cluster of islands, Denmark is quite proud of their water and energy sources! For instance, most Danes drink out of the sink because tap water goes through strict safety controls before even touching into homes. (Tip#1 If you don’t want to pay for water at restaurants…bring a water bottle! (Tip #2) Not only is Danish water super clean~it actually contains a lot of minerals such as calcium and magnesium which can lead to a limescale problem in people’s kettles but overall good for gut microbiome…most of the time. Make sure to clean your kettles though, it gets quite gross ;-p
While Danish fresh water is also quite reputable for is “cleanliness”, so are the surrounding oceans. This past week I had the opportunity to go cold plunging at my professor’s boathouse, as we learned about sustainable ocean filtering practices, such as raising blue clam farms near more polluted waters. Blue clams are known as filter feeders, as they literally thrive off of nitrogen from plankton/algae/bacteria and spit back out cleaner water from their siphons. It was pretty cool that these exist in Denmark~as I could physically see the differences by the transparency of the sea in relation to how many clams resided in the area.
On that note, since Denmark is surrounded by oceans on most sides, it’s a great place for wind energy due to its geography and windy climate. As the country is reliant on wind for over 50% of its energy, I wasn’t surprised by the amount of wind turbines I have seen so far (IEA).
I happened to jog past one of the 6,974 windmills near the Amagerstrand beach! Contrary to popular belief, it didn’t create much noise and it was pleasant to walk around knowing the positive impacts of these energy source compared to most other renewable alternatives. *cough cough nuclear*
*As a sidenote (not too related to renewable energy but Danish relationships to water)
I had the pleasure of cold plunging twice this past week, and would like to subject you to some pictures
it’s a very addictive Danish tradition that is good for your body’s internal cycle but I personally think I maxxed out after three times…(tip#3: please find a sauna near by)
