Some Body Else

Today I am reminded of my favorite art exhibit here in Copenhagen. “After the Sun – Forecasts from the North” showcases a diverse group of artists with ties to the Nordic region considering their relationships to landscape in a time of climate crisis. One of my favorite pieces in the exhibit is titled Some Body Else from artist Apathiaya Wanthiang. Some Body Else is an immersive installation of 16 red algae sheets illuminated and stretched across frames while a 38 minute soundtrack of human sounds and Apathiaya’s own monologue plays in the background. The accompanying plaque asks “what would it be like to inhabit the body of another being?”. I remember when I first visited this exhibit and sat amongst the glowing algae sheets I felt as though I was in the belly of a living breathing organism. This is the effect of her piece- to make you realize that we are in fact in the body of another being. I believe that realizing our interconnectedness is a vital step towards ending climate change and I’m interested in the various creative mediums that can be used to communicate that message.
