CY – Dinner with SG Alumnae

Networking through LinkedIn once again proved its value when I connected with another inspiring alum. This particular alum stood out not just for her impressive career trajectory from consulting to tech but also for her warm, approachable demeanor. From our first interaction, she exuded a friendliness that made our conversation feel like reconnecting with a long-lost friend rather than a formal networking meeting.

Our connection was sparked by our shared Wellesley background, which she spoke of with fondness and enthusiasm. She shared stories of the traditions she participated in, ones that are still vibrant parts of the college culture today. Hearing about her experiences at Wellesley, from the spirited and empowering environment to the close-knit community, brought back my own cherished memories and highlighted the lasting impact of our college years on our personal and professional lives.

During our conversation, she detailed her career journey beginning right after graduation when she joined Deloitte Singapore as a consultant. As someone keen on entering the consulting field, I was eager to learn about her experiences. She opened up about the various cases she tackled, including a particularly challenging project that involved restructuring a major retail company facing bankruptcy. This case required innovative problem-solving and intense collaboration, aspects she found both demanding and rewarding. Her insights into the demanding yet rewarding nature of the work were eye-opening. She spoke candidly about the challenges of maintaining work-life balance, emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing personal well-being amidst hectic project schedules.

The most intriguing part of our discussion centered on her transition from consulting to the tech industry, specifically her move to Google. She described the shift as both challenging and exhilarating, driven by her desire to be at the forefront of technological innovation. The skills she honed in consulting, such as analytical thinking and effective communication, were invaluable as she navigated her new role in tech. She also undertook additional training in data analytics and machine learning to better equip herself for the tech environment, showcasing her commitment to continuous learning.

Our conversation took an even more personal turn when she mentioned her fiancĂ©, a musician who, to my astonishment, had collaborated with my music production professor from last semester. They both attended Berklee School of Music for their master’s degrees, creating a wonderful serendipitous connection between our academic and personal lives. This unexpected link added another layer of depth to our meeting, illustrating the often surprising and interconnected nature of our social and professional networks.

Her observations about the cultural differences in the workplace, especially between Singapore and her experiences abroad, added another layer of depth to our conversation. She noted the unique blend of professionalism and communal respect pervasive in Singapore’s work culture, which she contrasted with the more individualistic approaches she encountered elsewhere.

The best piece of advice she offered was simple yet profound: “Stay curious and adaptable.” She stressed that the landscape of industries is continually evolving and the key to longevity and fulfillment in one’s career is the willingness to learn and the flexibility to embrace change. This advice resonated with me deeply as I contemplate my future career path, reinforcing my belief in the value of agility and continuous personal growth.

Reflecting on this conversation, I am reminded of the power of the Wellesley network and the unexpected doors it can open. The insights gained from this alum not only broadened my understanding of the consulting and tech industries but also deepened my appreciation for the diverse career paths Wellesley graduates pursue. As I left our meeting, I felt a renewed sense of excitement and determination, equipped with new perspectives and eager to carve my own unique career path.

This meeting was more than just an informational interview; it was a reminder of the enduring bonds formed through shared educational experiences and the profound impact these connections can have on our careers and personal development.
