Living Portrait and Tanner Traditions

Today’s post comes to you at this late hour for good reason. This evening the Fall 2011 initiates of TZE participated in one of the oldest traditions of the society. Founded on the principles of spreading art and beauty in the community, TZE hosts an event called the Living Portrait where the initiates dress up like a work of art and turn our cottage into a kind of living museum.

This semester the initiates stuck to the theme of women in film. Dressing as the lead women in the feature film posters of Volver, Memoirs of a Geisha, Dream girls, Almost Famous, Star Wars and Black Swan, the initiates turned our living room into our own Planet Hollywood. Complete with red carpet, popcorn, candy and rolling previews on a projector at the back of the living room, it was an Oscar award winning presentation.

Seeing projects like this come together for the pure joy of artistic expression is one of the reasons I love being in TZE. It’s also the reason this blog needed to be posted so late.

While it may seem that my life is mostly comprised of TZE events and frisbee tournaments (we played really well this past weekend for Get Skyy’d at Stonehill!), I also sometimes go to class. Today was not one of those days.

Classes were in fact cancelled today for students to attend the annual Tanner conference. Some of my brilliant and beautiful friends including but not limited to Sam, Alex, Vivian, Toaster, Ace, Daddy LC, Sparkles, Kaisa, Lukiih and Freckles all gave Tanner presentations today. Because the Tanner website is more articulate than I, this is their explanation of the mission of the conferences:

The Tanner Conference celebrates the relationship between the liberal arts classroom and student participation in an increasingly diverse and interdependent world.  http://www.wellesley.edu/tanner/about.html

I took what I believed to be a well deserved day off. I sent off a paper this morning to my MIT professor and looked over Latin translations. The majority of which was done in pajamas. After Living Portrait I had my weekly editorial board meeting for the Wellesley News and I’m wrapping up my night in the library next to friends and a fireplace. Overall, not a bad way to waste a Tuesday.
