A Traditional Halloween, Tanner, & Day of the Dead!

¡Feliz Día de los Muertos! Today was the Day of the Dead celebration in Tishman at the Campus Center. We ate Mexican food, danced to Mariachi music, and watched a Baile Folklórico performance like the one in the picture below.

Professor Hall, of the Spanish department, also gave a speech about her childhood growing up in Mexico. She teaches classes like “The Latin American Short Story” and is my complit major advisor. Professors and students danced away and for dessert there was flan, tres leches cake and arroz con leche.

On this day, November 2nd, we honor our deceased relatives and friends by placing their photos on an altar decorated with food offerings, their favorite treats, and flowers.

The Monday before today was Halloween, so I wore a rat hat that I found at a Buffalo Exchange thrift store in Davis Square for just 5 dollars. Easy costume indeed. I went with a friend of mine to see the original independent horror film Halloween at the Brattle independent theatre in Harvard Square. We laughed at how cheesy it was but all in all had a fun time watching it.
Conveniently, the next day was Tanner when students give presentations on past internships they’ve had over summer and talk about what they learned or about the projects and research they’ve worked on. Everyone gets the day off from their classes so that they can watch their friends present. I saw my friend Lourdes talk about her experience working as a paralegal in Cambridge this summer assisting immigration lawyers.

After that I had to babysit, and luckily tomorrow I have the day off from that because I am going to see the Japanese author Kenzaburo Oe at a lecture at Tufts University! I couldn’t have had a more exciting week than allllll of that. 🙂
