last week of classes

Yesterday was LDOC (last day of classes) for the Fall semester. This semester has been a ride and I am glad that it is over! This was my last Fall semester at Wellesley. I keep noting these milestones as I get closer to graduation.

I am a member of Yanvalou, a drum and dance group that focuses on the cultures of Haiti, Brazil, and Ghana as well as other parts of the African Diaspora. I am a drummer in the group and I really enjoy learning all about the different rhythms and traditions. We had our fall semester show last week and it went really well. We’ve spent the whole semester learning the songs we performed and the week before the actual show perfecting it. All the work paid off. I heard from members of the audience that the show looked great. Next semester is Yanvalou’s 30th anniversary. It promises to be a big event and I am excited to see what it will be like.

It snowed! again! I should probably stop updating you on every time it snows but I have been away from snow and actually kind of miss it. Plus, the snow just seems to appear, so it is always a surprise for me. Like I have mentioned before, Wellesley transforms into something magical when it snows. The early mornings right after it has snowed are always the most special.

The final day of classes also included a concert by Oshun. A duo who sing signs about self-love and spirituality. The concert was hosted by SBOG (they host a lot of student events) and was really fun. The group had a wonderful performance that I believe that everyone who was there had a great time. I know I did.

This past week was also my 21st birthday! My friends surprised me with a cake. It was a total surprise and I had no idea they were planning it. I am glad that I have made friends at Wellesley who make me feel special. I didn’t do much else for my birthday but I was really glad to just eat cake with my friends. Here is a picture of me and the cake I was given.

Until next time,

Laïssa
